- The Merlot imparts a delightful sweetness of flavour, a rich texture density, and an intense aroma of black fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds exceptional richness, black fruit aromas, a hint of liquorice, and a complete absence of green notes. Cabernet Franc contributes a magnificent sense of balance and poise, smoothing the elevated tannic power of the other varieties. Lastly, the Petit Verdot provides a subtle touch of spice that beautifully rounds out the overall bouquet. This is unquestionably a wine of immense concentration, displaying a remarkable sense of class and elegance.

Analytical data
The Antinori family have been producing wine in Tuscany for six centuries and exporting it for four; that’s twenty-six generations of uninterrupted family ownership. The first recorded mention of the family dates back to 1188 when they worked in the silk trade. They moved to Florence in the early thirteenth century and remain central figures in the city's fabric; Piazza Antinori is the square in the historical centre where their offices are located. Winemaking was added to the family’s activities in 1385, and during the sixteenth century the wines spread, along with Antinori’s reputation, to France, Flanders, Spain and North Africa. The purchase of the Tignanello estate in 1900 marked the beginning of a remarkable period of expansion, which shows no signs of abating. Through judicious acquisition of vineyards and an uncanny knack for developing iconic wines, Antinori has become Tuscany’s – arguably Italy’s – pre-eminent wine producer, with an important presence in Piedmont, Lombardy, Umbria and Puglia. Marchese Piero Antinori sums up the company’s outlook thus: “Ancient roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have never held back our spirit of innovation.”

Winery | Situated in Maremma on the Tuscan coast, sixty miles southwest of Florence, the Guado al Tasso estate extends from the green hills surrounding the old village of Bolgheri down to the sea. This beautiful plain is called the ‘Anfiteatro Bolgherese’ because the hills enclose the plains overlooking the sea to form a natural amphitheatre. The Bolgheri DOC started as rosé-only; whites were permitted in 1984, and ten years later, the laws finally recognized the extraordinary success of the mould-breaking Cabernet-based reds. From the 2007 vintage, Cabernet Franc has become an exceptional blending component for Guado al Tasso and a limited-edition single-variety bottling called Matarocchio. |
