- The Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, flourished this year, from flowering to dominating the final structure and taste of the wine; this vintage has a deep scarlet colour and a nose of blackberries, Assam tea, dark chocolate, and mulled berries. The palate has rich black and red fruits, especially blackcurrants, cherries, damsons, and figs, with warm cinnamon spice and a hint of mint. A smoky earthiness also characterizes this vintage. The tannins are well integrated, with good acidity and a long, dry finish.
Musar only releases its grand vin when it’s ready to drink – there are violets and ripe red berry fruit from Cinsault; spice, liquorice, and burly backbone from Carignan, blackcurrant, blackberry and silky elegance from Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s ready to drink, yes, but there’s no rush - Jonathan Ray, The Spectator Magazine, April 2016
“One-third each of Cabernet, Cinsault and Carignan aged for a year in French Nevers oak barrels and released in spring 2016.Mid crimson. Light, sweet start. For the moment, it’s a bit simple. Bright, ripe red fruit. It has a slightly burnt edge. Lots of tannins. Quite dry and youthful on the finish. A much longer bottle age is needed. By far the most youthful wine in this vertical.”

17++ POINTS
“This has good energy, featuring an integrated arrangement of cherry paste, currant tart and blood orange flavours, with details of liquorice, thyme and leather echoing into the smooth, tobacco-tinged finish. The better of two bottles tasted. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and
Cinsault. Drink now through 2029. 16,700 cases made, 1,800 cases imported.” GILLIAN SCIARETTA – THE WINE SPECTATOR 91 POINTS

Winery | Seven years in the making, Chateau Musar Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Cinsault from vineyards near the Bekaa Valley villages of Aana and Kefraya on gravelly soils over limestone. Planted from the 1930s onwards, these mature bush vines (average age: 40 years) yield low: between 15 to 35hl per hectare. |
