- Donelan refers to Cuvee Christine as their ‘gateway drug to Syrah.’ A careful blend of the best parcels from across Sonoma, this is a head wine with flavours that run the full gambit, encompassing fruit, spice and savoury notes. There’s something for everyone here. This wine’s quality-to-price ratio is unmatched. The nose has mulberries, blood orange, white flowers and fresh coffee grinds. It possesses excellent length and breadth on the palate, with round, supple tannins and a long, 45-second plus finish. The whole cluster fermentation gives it backbone without being too firm.
Donelan produces some of the best Syrahs in California, and this 100% Syrah, a blend of several single-vineyard sources as the entry-level Syrah in the Donelan range, shows why. Here, the emphasis is on fruit, which is high-toned and gorgeous, with expressive blue-black notes, pure perfumed violets and charcuterie. Full-bodied offering black cherry and blueberry compote dusted with cocoa powder. Mocha-dusted grilled meats layer intensity of flavour, and the wine has an exacting grippy quality from its whole cluster inclusion. Pristine, pure, plump, dark fruits meld with mind-bending mineral tension and integrated cedar-tinged tannins that have a pixelated granularity about them, all framed on the finish by violet pastille, graphite and white pepper and named after Donelan brothers Tripp and Cushing's mom.
