Sadly it was ravaged in the wildfires of 2017, however the Donelan family have already replanted and are committed to bringing this incredible wine back to market as soon as the grapes produce fruit of sufficient quality. In the meantime, the existing stock will become ever more prized.
The sole vineyard owned by Donelan Family Winery, Obsidian is the unique place they cultivate and bathe in terroir. On a steep perch rising above the Franz Valley floor in Knight’s Valley, Obsidian seems to want water even amid rainstorms. The vines struggle mightily to produce canes and leaves, the berries are tiny, yields are unbelievably low, and flavour concentration is ethereal. Year after year, it has produced stunning wines characterised by fullness, minerality and structure that consistently wow critics and consumers alike. Sadly, it was ravaged in the wildfires of 2017. | Winery | The company motto, ‘Wine is a Journey, not a Destination’, clearly indicates the ethos of Donelan Family Wines. Founded by Joe Donelan, who now runs the business alongside his sons Cushing and Tripp, Donelan is a small, boutique Sonoma winery producing Syrah, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Roussanne and Viognier. Producing just 8,000 cases per year, they prize quality over all other factors. Simply put, they think wine should taste great and work with every vintage and every grape. To achieve this goal, they always recognise that next year will bring another step on the road. They believe that the best wines are not made but discovered and take pride in harnessing the most outstanding qualities and natural variations in a vineyard and a variety. |
