- It is a wine with an appealing juiciness that embraces a polish, velvety, and ethereal character. Delicate berry notes cede to red-orange, anise and the Scorzone summer black truffle. The wine displays a vertical lift, austere tannins, and a long finish.
- A mix of ripe fruits, liquorice, juniper, and earth flavours mark this austere Barolo, which tiptoes between elegance and power. With air, a soft and intriguing wooded note comes forward. A vortex of dark fruits envelops the palate, together with layers of robust tannins.
Fermentation and maceration for around three weeks, followed by ageing in oak for 24 months.
Scarce snowfalls during the winter months were the precursor to a dry spell. January and February continued to be dry, with average to low temperatures. These optimal conditions helped to protect against the onset of diseases. Abundant rainfall (200 mm) with average to low temperatures (15-17°C) occurred in April and May. At the end of June, the temperatures rose sharply (from 26 degrees to 41.5°C for about 3 days) and caused stress to the plants with signs of browning appearing on the leaves. The first significant rains set in from mid-July onwards, with 200 mm falling in Barbaresco. Temperatures settled at around 26-30° degrees for the rest of the summer. More rain fell, 800 mm, from the beginning of the year to the end of August. The soil with a high water content and warm temperatures allowed the phenolic ripening to progress. We started the harvest in Barbaresco at the same time as the harvest in Barolo. Still, the harvest was shorter in Barolo, starting at the beginning of October and finishing on October 20.

Winery | Today, the Gaja winery comprises 103 hectares of vineyard in the Langhe and is run by Angelo, his wife Lucia and their children Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni. The wines have never been better. Since the move back to DOP status for his Cru wines (‘Sorì San Lorenzo’, ‘Costa Russi’ and ‘Sorì Tildìn’ in Barbaresco and ‘Sperss’ in Barolo), from the 2013 vintage, the wines have displayed an ineffable elegance and remain among the very best of the region. The exceptional ‘Sperss’ Barolo is sourced from a vineyard in Serralunga, which neighbours Massolino’s ‘Margheria’ and ‘Vigna Rionda’. It is rivalled only by the ‘Sorì Tildìn’ and ‘Sorì San Lorenzo’ Barbaresco’s, which consistently impress from vintage to vintage. In addition to Gaja’s Nebbiolo-based wines, they also make a very fine Sauvignon Blanc ‘Alteni di Brassica’ and the outstanding ‘Rossj Bass’ and ‘Gaia & Rey’ Chardonnays. |
