Luis Seabra Xisto Cru Douro Tinto 2021
- Grape Rufete, Touriga Franca, Tinta Carvalha, Alicante Bouchet, Donzelinho Tinto
- Country Portugal
- Region Covas
- ABV 12 %
- Producer Luis Seabra
- Case size 6/ 75cl
- 11 months on lees and 22 months total in older French oak. Big and structural, yet so well knit, with knotty purple and blue fruit, thorns, worn leather, salts, and dried florals on the savoury, long frame. Tannins are savoury and firm, though very well integrated, even in youth. Much time to go ahead.

Luis Seabra may be a new name on the Portuguese wine scene, but he has already crafted some of the Douro’s most exciting wines. He worked as Dirk Niepoort’s right-hand man from 2004 until leaving to set up his own label in 2012. He is starting small, producing just 5,000 bottles of each of these three wines.

Winery | Winemaking involves minimal intervention, and the style reflects the concentration of care lavished by this experienced winemaker on his tiny output: pure yet complex, more savoury than fruity, with a density of texture and long, almost salty finishes marking the wines out as something very special. Luis Seabra is certainly a name to watch, but he has also hit the ground running with a stunning debut. |
