Tasting Notes
This iconic vintage from Mount Pleasant’s revered Old Paddock vineyard showcases the finesse and power of heritage Shiraz vines planted in 1921.
Expect aromas of ripe blackberries, red currants, and subtle spice, underpinned by savoury notes. The palate delivers intense dark fruit, vibrant acidity, and a structured tannin profile that reflects its old-vine pedigree.
Crafted from a low-yielding vintage in the Hunter Valley, this Shiraz benefits from a dry, disease-free growing season that ensured concentrated flavours and exceptional purity. A wine of elegance, balance, and impressive aging potential.
Vintage Conditions
The 2018 growing season saw low rainfall and warmer-than-average temperatures. Early budburst and an early harvest resulted in smaller yields but excellent fruit quality. The dry climate eliminated disease risk, allowing the Shiraz grapes to ripen fully and deliver a wine of great structure and depth.

Customer Reviews
★★★★★ "Truly outstanding. Deep, concentrated flavours with an elegant structure. This is a benchmark Hunter Shiraz." – Sarah J., London
★★★★☆ "Loved the history behind it. Exceptional balance and aging potential." – Martin L., Manchester
The fruit was carefully selected and destemmed into small open-top fermenters. A short cold soak followed by a nine-day fermentation with selected yeasts at controlled temperatures. The wine was pressed off its skins into large format French oak barrels, of which 20% were new. The wine spent time in a tank before bottling.
Aromas of ripe black and red berry fruits, supported by savoury and spice elements, lead to intense fruits on the palate. Exquisite acidity and a distinguished tannin profile are the hallmarks of 1921 Vines Shiraz.

Winery | This easterly-facing site was the perfect location for Maurice O'Shea's first Shiraz plantings at Mount Pleasant in 1921. Sheltered from the winds and hot afternoon sun, the fruit from this block is famed for its impeccable structure and intensity. The vineyard is cultivated using sustainable techniques, such as employing mulch to nourish the vines and growing cover crops to increase the biodiversity in the soil. This sustainable approach has resulted in some of the healthiest vines on the estate in recent years; the vines have developed plentiful canopies, which have assisted in preventing fruit sunburn. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal maturity. |
