Caterina Bellanova San Marzano Italy
Caterina Bellanova, a trained biologist, is the queen of San Marzano, and her wines reflect the region and its native grape varieties. She leads Cantine San Marzano, which was named European Producer of the Year in the 2015 Sommelier Wine Awards. This cooperative, founded in 1962, has grown significantly, now boasting over 1,200 vine growers. The winery is known for producing elegant wines that honour ancient Apulian wine traditions while using modern and technologically advanced vinification techniques.
San Marzano 'Anniversario 62' is a wine created to celebrate the cooperative's 60th anniversary. It comes from the central area of D.O.P. "Primitivo di Manduria" and is made from grapes grown in very old vineyards in San Marzano and Sava.
This iconic wine is described as densely flavoured and fleshy, with hints of prunes and chocolate-covered black cherry combined with fresh herbs. The grapes used to produce this wine were hand-harvested at an advanced state of ripening. The wine underwent temperature-controlled fermentation at 24 to 26°C for approximately 15 days and then underwent malolactic conversion in stainless steel vats before being racked into French and American oak barrels, where it matured for 18 months.
In 2021, Cantine San Marzano was awarded the 'Cooperative Winery of the Year Award' by Gambero Rosso.
