South Africa represents exceptional wine quality and relative affordability.
South Africa has become an influential player in the global wine market due to its rich wine culture, high quality, and relatively affordable prices. The favourable exchange rate makes investing in these exceptional wines an opportune time. For example, winemakers like Samantha O’Keefe of Lismore and Richard of Kershaw Wines in Elgin have been producing some of the finest Chardonnay globally, showcasing precision, terroir, and robustness that can rival the best in the world. Richard also excels in producing exquisite Pinot Noir and outstanding Rhône-styled Syrah. On the other hand, Samantha has made a notable mark in crafting Viognier, which competes with the distinguished offerings from France. Since the end of Apartheid in 1994, South Africa has experienced significant growth in the global wine market, creating anticipation and intrigue for the future. Taking advantage of the current advantageous exchange rate to support the country while obtaining exceptional wine deals is highly recommended. Of particular note is the emergence of South African Barrel-Fermented Chenin Blanc, which has gained prominence similar to the rise of Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc in the 1990s. This variety has nearly surpassed the historical significance of Chenin Blanc in France, which has been known for producing exceptional sweet and dry white wines for centuries.
The Swartland region has experienced a notable surge in prominence in recent times. In the mid-nineties, Swartland fruit was predominantly allocated to co-operatives for minimal financial return. Fast forward to 2010, single vine Syrah’s and Chenin’s commanded prices exceeding £50 per bottle, signalling a remarkable transformation within a mere 15-year span. In my assessment, specialists in Chenin from Swartland, the enchanting valley of Breedekloof, and the longstanding estates in the western and northern precincts of Stellenbosch are presently crafting some of the most compelling and equitably priced fine white wines available globally. A modest expenditure of around £20 can procure exceptional wine offerings from these areas. Furthermore, the enduring value presented by Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside the exceptional terroir and untamed climate of Cape Agulhas, located at the southernmost tip of the continent, collectively offer a comprehensive array of definitive wines.
Here is a list of some of the perhaps less obvious South African wines that help to illustrate the unbeatable value and diversity of this magical place…
Lismore Estate Vineyards Reserve Cuvée Blanc 2022
Greyton
WAS £46.58
NOW £40.17- 14% discount
White gold with pale green hues. Swirling complex nose of globe artichoke, grilled asparagus, peppers and green figs, and green banana. Wow. The palate is vibrant and dry, with
preserved lemons and a hint of bitter almond. Wonderful texture. Rich but deft. Either needs a lobster or another five years in the cellar.
Richard Kershaw Wines Clonal Selection Elgin Chardonnay 2020
Elgin
£45.96 per bottle.
Complex aromas of lemon, gardenia, chalk, and powdered rock lead to incredible flavour and concentration on the palate. At the same time, incisive acidity underpins the mineral
texture with creamy lemon notes on the long, exquisite finish. This restrained, mineral style is focused on elegance, with a white fruit character, a touch of oatmeal, and delicate
oak spice notes.
Lomond Wines Sauvignon Blanc Pincushion 2022
Cape Agulhas
WAS £21.54
NOW £19.38 - 10% discount
What an astonishing white wine! When you know, you know… Silver and green hues reflect through a pale but dense-looking liquid. The nose initially hits with a grassy,
fecund, fynbos (South African undergrowth) note, backed up by a hint of lavender and crushed oyster shells, very much a signature aroma of Cape Agulhas. It has an almost
immediate salinity on the palate, layered over Meyer lemon zest and a vivid, almost sumac-like tartness. It is compact and full of tension, unfurling slowly on the finish. Sensational
and individual Sauvignon Blanc.
Mulderbosch Vineyards Faithful Hound 2022
Stellenbosch
WAS £19.56
NOW £17.22 - 12% discount
Nice, limpid, bright blood-red hues. Typical Mediterranean ripe Cabernet and Malbec notes, with mulberry, damson and cassis aromas. A nice earthy under-currant keeps
everything in check. In the mouth, immediately, there is a spicy, high-toned acidity mingled with stewed cherries, bark and a hint of vanilla. Dry and deft. Savoury and satisfying.
Lismore Cape South Coast Pinot Noir 2021
Greyton
£38.73 per bottle
This elegant Pinot Noir delivers a complex bouquet of crushed rose petals, wild jasmine, and fresh French herbs. The palate shows beautiful purity with layered red fruits, cranberry and raspberry, silky tannins, and a long, savoury finish.
