1 case - 12/75cl Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine des Beaumont 1999 @ £1,295 £1,175 per 12 duty paid & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,995++) now – rare & mature bargain case, iconic vintage – photo attached – 0.55ha c.150 cases

1 case – 12/75cl Musigny Grand Cru, Domaine Drouhin-Laroze 2001 @ £14,295 per 12 IB & OWC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £21,995++) now – photo attached – 0.12ha, c.40 cases – bought EP UK agent

Drop dead gorgeous aromas of red and black pinot fruit with a trace of earth and only the barest hints of wood spice. Musky, complex, slightly floral ripe flavors deliver excellent intensity and this expands from the mid-palate to the long, lingering finish. Silk, elegance and finesse and this is easily the finest example of Musigny produced in the short time Drouhin-Laroze has owned its parcel. Outstanding quality here.

2 cases – 12/75cl Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru, Domaine Drouhin-Laroze 2002 @ £3,345 per 12 IB & OWC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £3,650-£3,930++) now – photo attached, 2nd image available – bought EP UK agent

Oak spice frames elegant, complex and relatively fine aromas of earth and game and lead to rich, pungent, powerful, impressively intense flavors that have an edgy, tannic finish yet the underlying material does a good job of buffering it. Solid quality here.

89-92 points Allen Meadows, Burghound, Jan 2004, 2010-2020

1 case – 6/75cl Musigny Grand Cru, Domaine J-F Mugnier 2004 @ £10,595 £10,295 per 6 IB & OWC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £12,995++) now – photo attached - 1.14ha, c.380 cases

A simply sublime mix of spicy, elegant, pure and sophisticated red and black fruit aromas that blend into supple, rich and again, extremely pure, indeed crystalline medium full flavors that are restrained and backward but not stern like those of the Bonnes Mares, all wrapped in a vibrant finish of exceptional intensity. This is superbly well focused and almost etches itself into the palate though the tannic spine is well buffered by plenty of mid-palate sap. A complete wine that will also demand a bit of patience.

1 case – 6/75cl Musigny Grand Cru, Domaine Joseph Drouhin 2004 @ £4,345 per 6 IB & OWC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £5,395++) now – photo available – 0.67ha, c.223 cases

1 case – 3/150cl Musigny Grand Cru, Domaine Joseph Drouhin 2004 @ £4,245 per 3 MAGS IB & OWC6 (Lowest Wine Searcher £5,295++) now – photo available – 3 mags in an OWC6 – missing wooden lid

An exotic and spicy nose features raspberry, red current, anise and clove notes that give way to sweet, classy and notably finely detailed flavors that are also relatively forward early but tighten up considerably on the backend. In most vintages, this is the undisputed class of the cellar and while it may ultimately be so once again, in 2004 it has competition. Still, lovely stuff by any standard.

This is turning out better than I foresaw as my original review (see herein) noted some finishing dryness but that was not the case here. A still exceptionally fresh and very primary if highly perfumed nose is composed of spicy red berry fruit aromas that are at once layered and pure. There is both excellent richness and volume to the naturally sweet, detailed and intensely mineral-infused medium-full flavors that exude a subtle classiness on the powerful and focused finale. If there is a nit it's that the complexity that this normally displays isn't present, or at least not yet. That said I underscore that this is in magnum and thus the '06 Musigny is still a decade plus away from its apogee. In sum this is classy stuff that is very definitely still on the way up so patience required and particularly so in the larger format bottling.

1 case – 6/75cl Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Louis Jadot 2007 @ £925 per 6 IB & OC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £995++) now – photo attached

A discreet lashing of wood sets off fresh, ripe and very pure black cherry, spiced plum and warm earth nose that leads to impressively rich flavors that are on the forward side yet retain excellent size, weight and power as the finish is driving, indeed explosive. I really like the textured mouth feel as there is ample minerality and plenty of sap that really coats the mouth.

1 case – 6/75cl Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru, Domaine Pierre Damoy 2007 @ £1,695 per 6 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £2,200-£2,495++) now – photo attached – bought EP UK agent

2007 Chambertin–Clos de Bèze: Here the nose offers a small but clear step up in elegance with a wonderfully spicy and ripe aromatic profile of red, blue and black pinot fruit, underbrush and a touch of forest floor that can also be found on the equally spicy, pure, full and delicious big-bodied flavors that possess excellent power and verve and this sense of drive flows through to the cool, long, dusty and sappy finish. A wine of style and grace with impressive material that is built to age over the next decade.

3 cases – 12/75cl Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru, Domaine Drouhin-Laroze 2007 @ £1,995 per 12 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £2,304-£2,400++) now – photos available – Bought EP UK agent

Mild wood spice frames an elegant and kaleidoscopic nose of high-toned red and black berry fruit aromas liberally laced with natural spices that offer impressive nuance and excellent complexity that introduces supple, finely detailed and beautifully textured flavors wrapped in a dusty, mineral-infused and austere but not hard finish. This is decidedly backward at present and like the Musigny and Clos de Vougeot will require ample cellar time to really blossom.

2 cases – 12/75cl Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru, Domaine Drouhin-Laroze 2008 @ £1,745 per 12 IB & OWC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,900-£2,400++) now – photos available – Bought EP UK agent

2008 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze: (from a parcel of 1.5 ha of vines planted in 1949). An expressive and elegant mélange of oak trimmed and very spicy red and blue pinot fruit aromas nuanced by hints of violets and the expected pungent Gevrey earth that is also picked up by the rich and particularly full flavors that possess a natural sweetness, which serves to buffer the firm tannins on the wonderfully persistent finish. A lovely and entirely classic Bèze that is built to age.

3 cases – 6/75cl Musigny Grand Cru, Domaine Jacques Prieur 2008 @ £3,545 per 6 IB & OC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £4,000++) now – photo attached, 2nd & 3rd image available

The spicy and densely fruited nose is stunningly elegant with breathtaking purity and is followed by rich, intense and powerful broad-scaled flavors that are naturally sweet and precise, all culminating in an explosive and highly persistent finish. This is by no means a really big Musigny yet it is impeccably well-balanced, fresh and complete. In sum, this is a seriously fine effort.

2 cases – 6/75cl Musigny Grand Cru, Domaine de la Vougeraie 2008 @ £4,545 per 6 IB & OC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £5,395++) now – photo attached, 2nd image available – 0.21ha, c.70 cases

A very backward nose that is also quite reduced leads to big, rich, and opulent flavors that possess a forceful, detailed and quite minerally finish that is serious, brooding and strikingly long yet despite the power possesses a seductive mouth feel that remains detailed and quite precise. I really like the texture and like the Bonnes Mares, it delivers a wonderful combination of power and finesse.

1 case – 6/75cl Musigny Grand Cru, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue 2008 @ £3,545 per 6 IB & OWC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £3,750-£4,600++) now – photo attached – UK agent stock

2008 Musigny Vieilles Vignes: This is also quite reserved at present with an elegant, airy, cool and pure nose that is kaleidoscopically complex as it offers red currant, plum, black cherry and a panoply of floral and spice notes, in particular violet and anise, before marrying seamlessly into mineral-driven and alluring big-bodied flavors that explode on the powerful and almost painfully intense finish that delivers genuinely stunning length. I love the way Musigny can so effortlessly combine a silky palate impression with serious muscle. This should be quite impressive in time though note that it will need a minimum of 18 to 25 years of cellar time.

96 points Allen Meadows, Burghound /2028+

1 case – 6/75cl Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru ‘Vieilles Vignes’, Domaine Joseph Roty 2009 @ £2,695 per 6 IB & OC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £3,050++) now - bought UK EP – photo attached

2009 Charmes-Chambertin - Très Vieilles Vignes: (from vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that all those that have died over the years have been replanted). A very ripe nose of cassis, warm earth and black cherries is trimmed in soft wood notes. There is superb richness to the opulent and mouth coating big-bodied flavors that possess positively buckets of extract, all wrapped in a hugely long and mildly toasty finish. This is not necessarily more complex than the Griotte though there is more underlying material so it may be in time.

94 points Allen Meadows, Burghound /2024+

1 case – 6/75cl Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, Domaine Drouhin-Laroze 2009 @ £820 per 6 IB & OC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £846-£925++) now - bought UK EP – photo attached

2009 Bonnes Mares: (from a 1.5 ha parcel that is almost entirely in terres rouges). This is also quite restrained, indeed almost shy with a muted nose of dark berry fruit and earth that gives way to extremely fresh, supple and surprisingly forward flavors that almost instantly tighten up into a backwards and very firm and austere finish. This is a classically styled and proportioned Bonnes Mares that will require at least 15 years of cellar time.

1 case – 6/75cl Clos de la Roche Grand Cru ‘Cuvee Vieilles Vignes’, Domaine Ponsot 2010 @ £2,690 per 6 IB & OWC (SIB) now – photo available - Bought EP UK agent

2010 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes: (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche). In stark contrast to the expressiveness of the Clos St. Denis, this is almost mute and even

aggressive swirling liberates only the briefest glimpses of wild red berries and earth notes. There is superb size and weight to the imposing and overtly muscular flavors that also enjoy an incredible amount of dry extract that confers a supple and seductively textured mouth feel to the highly concentrated mid-palate. The presently buried tannins are intense and markedly firm though not hard on the explosively long finish that seems to go on and on. This should be something very special if given sufficient time to reach its apogee.

1 case – 6/75cl Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru ‘Vieilles Vignes’, Domaine Joseph Roty 2010 @ £3,245 per 6 IB & OC (SIB) (Lowest Wine Searcher £3,695++) now - bought UK EP – photo attached

There is just enough wood to be visible but it should be absorbed in short order. Interestingly, the aromatic profile is relatively similar to that of the Griotte, though this has significantly more depth and concentration to the full-bodied, powerful and explosive flavors that benefit greatly from the exceptional depth of material before culminating in a massively long and impeccably well-balanced finish. Sometimes the Roty Charmes displays its wood for years but the 2010 version appears as though it will eat it sooner than usual. In short, this is a stunner of a wine that clearly outclasses its two grands crus stable mates so if you can find it buy it.

A gentle touch of wood frames ripe but cool red berry aromas that are discreetly floral but exuberantly spicy. There is an equally intense minerality on the wonderfully rich, refined, pure and beautifully detailed flavors that are underpinned by a velvety mouth feel and very firm yet fine tannins on the explosively long finish. A genuinely stunning effort that will require an ample amount of patience but should be well worth the wait.

2011 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze: (from a parcel of 1.5 ha of vines planted in 1949). An extraordinarily spicy and complex nose evidences cool, fresh and admirably pure aromas of cassis, red berries and plum. There is a floral note on the remarkably rich, concentrated and extract-rich flavors that really coat the palate on the dusty, long and impressively deep finish. A classic Bèze and well worth considering.

92-95 points Allen Meadows, Burghound /2023+

1 case – 6/75cl Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Ponsot 2011 @ £1,320 per 6 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,495++) 2-3 weeks

2011 Chapelle-Chambertin: (from a .60 ha parcel split 50/50 between Chapelle and En Gémeaux). A brooding and inexpressive nose of both red and dark berry fruit evidences discreet liqueur-like nuances as well. The impressively scaled and palate coating flavors coat the mouth with dry extract and possess imposing size and weight before culminating in a firm, austere and beautifully persistent finish. This is not for the faint-hearted as it’s a big Chapelle and clearly intended to be cellared for the long haul as this is also not going to drink especially well young.

92-95 points Allen Meadows, Burghound /2026+

2 cases – 6/75cl Musigny Grand Cru, Domaine Dufouleur Freres 2011 @ £4,795 per 6 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £6,995++) now – photo attached, 2nd case available – plot sold to Domaine Faiveley in 2015 – incredibly rare 0.10ha, c33 cases. 0nly 6 modern vintages ever made (2009-2014)

1 case – 3/75cl Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, Domaine Georges Roumier 2012 @ £4,095 per 3 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £4,776++) 2-3 weeks

2012 Bonnes Mares: (from several parcels totaling 1.5 ha that are roughly divided between .90 ha of terres rouges and .60 ha of terres blanches, the latter of which has the slightly older vines). A markedly floral nose exhibits plenty of spice and earth elements that add breadth to the purple fruit-infused nose. There is excellent size, weight and power to the big-bodied, intense and concentrated flavors that possess copious amounts of dry extract that imparts a seductive texture and buffers the very firm tannic spine on the hugely long finish. This too is an overtly robust yet impeccably well-balanced wine that should also age for years; indeed it will absolutely require it.

95 points Allen Meadows, Burghound /2032+

2 cases – 6/75cl Mazoyeres Chambertin Grand Cru, Marchand-Tawse (Domaine Maume/Marchand-Tawse label) 2012 @ £850 per 6 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,195++) now – photo attached – First vintage, Tawse purchased Domaine Maume in 2012. C.600 bottles produced

2012 Mazoyères-Chambertin: Here the wood is no longer subtle as it fights with the otherwise fresh and layered nose of distinctly floral-inflected aromas of ripe red currant and plum. There is a lush and fleshy mouth feel to the equally ripe middle

weight flavors that are delicious but don’t quite have the same depth on the lingering finish. To be sure this is perfectly good but I prefer the overall complexity of the Lavaut.

90-92 points Allen Meadows, Burghound /2024+

4 cases – 6/75cl Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Olivier Jouan 2012 @ £630 per 6 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £668++) 2-3 weeks

Here too there is enough wood to notice though not enough to detract materially from the purity of the elegant and expressive red berry fruit liqueur, spice and earth suffused aromas. There is fine concentration to the mineral-driven, intense and well-delineated medium weight plus flavors that coat the palate with dry extract before culminating in an impeccably well-balanced and strikingly long finish. This is really lovely and should age well over the mid to long-term yet it should be approachable after only 5 to 7 years of bottle age.

92-94 points Allen Meadows, Burghound (1/2014)

2 cases – 1/150cl Clos de Tart Grand Cru MONOPOLE, Domaine du Clos de Tart 2012 (Ex-Domaine library release 2022) @ £750 per 1 MAG IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £800-£850++) 2-3 weeks

2012 Clos de Tart: (from vines that average around 60+ years of age). Discreet but not invisible wood sets off reserved and markedly ripe aromas of plum, spice, cassis, dried flowers and plenty of earth character. The concentrated big-bodied flavors possess copious amounts of palate coating dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the beautifully long finish that seems to lack a bit of energy at present. This is an imposing but not massive vintage for this storied wine that is borderline heavy. It’s of course possible that the recent bottling has fatigued the wine but for the moment this comes across as a bit flat.

1 case – 3/150cl Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru, Domaine Bouchard Pere & Fils 2013 @ £920 per 3 MAGS IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,000-£1,195++) now – photo available

2013 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze: (from purchased grapes). Interestingly this is not quite as ripe as the Chapelle though it is notably spicier with its expressive nose of menthol, various red berries and earth. There is excellent intensity, punch and minerality to the large-scaled flavors that possess markedly better depth, particularly on the explosively long and beautifully well-balanced finale. This is wonderfully rich yet there is a certain reserve and a firm tannic spine that suggest that this should age effortlessly.

1 case – 6/75cl Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru ‘Vieilles Vignes’, Domaine Denis Bachelet 2013 @ £3,395 per 6 IB & OC now – photo available

2013 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes: (from a .44 ha parcel of 90+ year old vines situated directly across from Chambertin; the yields are so low and the vines so exposed that Bachelet says that he always harvests this parcel first). Mild

reduction pushes to the background what appears to be very ripe fruit that is trimmed in enough wood to comment on. The markedly vibrant and extremely rich flavors possess an opulent mouth feel on the concentrated yet refined finish that delivers positively huge length. Despite being firmly structured it is less imposing than some vintages and should actually be enjoyable after only 6 years or so of bottle age even though it will need 12 to 15 to reach its full apogee.

93-95 points Allen Meadows, Burghound/2025+

1 case – 6/75cl Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru ‘Les Carrieres’, Domaine Gilbert & Christine Felettig 2013 @ £385 per 6 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £395-£500++) now – 2022 £570 – photo available

2013 Chambolle-Musigny “Les Carrières”: (there are only two owners of Les Carrières and Felettig is the only producer; from a .40 ha parcel). A completely different aromatic profile is present here with its nose of essence of pure raspberry, red cherry and lilac nuances. This is also intensely mineral-driven with the medium weight flavors displaying excellent punch and razor-sharp delineation on the complex and beautifully persistent finish that is ever-so-mildly austere. This moderately firm effort should amply repay mid-term cellaring.

2014 Chambolle-Musigny “Les Carrières”: (there are only two owners of Les Carrières and Felettig is the only producer; from a .40 ha parcel). A ripe and ultra-fresh nose features an elegant and notably floral array of rose petal, lilac, black cherry and raspberry scents. There is fine richness but also good detail to the relatively full-bodied and muscular flavors that are shaped by a markedly firm tannic spine on the mineral-driven and youthfully austere finale. Terrific.

1 case – 3/75cl Musigny Grand Cru ‘Vieilles Vignes’, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue 2014 @ £1,455 per 3 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,500-£1,800++) now – C&B stock

2014 Musigny Vieilles Vignes: (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn’t include the .67 ha parcel planted to chardonnay). While highly complex this is cool to the point of only grudgingly revealing a strikingly layered combination of violets, rose petals, sandalwood, anise, clove, plum and dark currant scents. This is a big and overtly muscular wine with broad-shouldered and admirably concentrated flavors yet for all of the impressive size, weight and volume, the massively long finish is serene, even Zen-like. 2014 is a relatively seductive and forward vintage for this storied wine, and I appreciate that calling a wine “forward” when it will likely need 20 years to fully mature is a relative concept!

1 case – 6/75cl Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Tortochot 2014 @ £945 £875 per 6 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £995++) now – photo attached

2014 Chambertin: (from a .40 ha parcel). Here too there are notes of menthol and wood toast that presently fight somewhat with the red currant, pungent earth, underbrush and overtly floral-infused nose. There is more volume still to the slightly denser and markedly more mineral-inflected flavors that deliver excellent length though somewhat curiously, less complexity. More depth will almost certainly develop if you have the patience to wait at least 7 to 8 years first.

The 2014 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses, from 80-year-old vines, includes 50% whole bunch fruit and is matured in 50% new oak. It is interesting to compare this with the Bonnes-Mares; this is perhaps more serious, a little more saturnine (which is unusual for this vineyard), with touches of cold flint tincturing the blackberry and blueberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, but there is real solidity here, the acidity well-judged with a gentle grip on the saline finish. It clearly needs several years in bottle but it will be worth the wait.

1 case – 6/75cl Musigny Grand Cru, Domaine J-F Mugnier 2014 @ £9,795 per 6 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £10,500-£13,000++) now - 1.14ha, c.380 cases

2014 Musigny: (from a 1.13 ha parcel). This is aromatically spicier still with its more deeply pitched nose that is composed of plum, dark cherry, violet, lavender and orange pekoe tea. Like the Amoureuses this is at once silky but powerful with plenty of minerality characterizing the velvet-textured big-bodied flavors that coat the mouth with dry extract that also serves to buffer the markedly firm tannic spine on the balanced and hugely long finish. This is a veritable ‘wow’ wine though one that is going to need plenty of time to reveal its full potential.

1 case - 6/75cl Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, Domaine Georges Lignier 2015 @ £820 per 6 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £820++) now

Palish red with a hint of amber. A bit cooler and more peppery than the Clos Saint-Denis and Clos de la Roche, with its reticent red fruit aromas complicated by herbs and menthol. Then densely packed, savory and intense, more about soil tones than primary fruit. Not a sweet style but youthfully penetrating. Finishes sweet, slightly medicinal and classically dry, with lingering salty and spicy qualities. A rather rigorous wine in the context of the vintage, but then this is Bonnes-Mares, which has traditionally been one of Burgundy's longest-aging grand crus.

2015 Chambolle-Musigny “Les Carrières”: (there are only two owners of Les Carrières and Felettig is the only producer; from a .40 ha parcel). A restrained mix of floral elements combine with notes of plum and dark raspberry, all of which is trimmed in subtle wood. There is solid size, weight and volume to the tautly muscular flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration as well as plenty of power on the mouth coating, balanced and beautifully persistent finish. This is really quite impressive but it will require at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring first and should reward 12 to 15.

1 case – 6/75cl Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, Domaine J-F Mugnier 2016 @ £2,795 per 6 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £2,916 loose++) 2-3 weeks

2016 Bonnes Mares: (50% of the vines in this .35 ha parcel were planted in 1980 and 1988, with the remainder planted in the ‘50s; the vines are planted in both terres rouges and terres blanches but there is a slight majority in the latter). Like the Fuées, this is quite firmly reduced and will definitely benefit from a thorough aeration. The dense and sappy big-bodied flavors possess a relatively polished mouthfeel despite the presence of obvious muscle on the powerful, serious and youthfully austere finish. 1 case – 3/75cl Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, Domaine Georges Roumier 2017 @ £3,395 per 3 IB & OC now – photo attached

2017 Bonnes Mares: (from 6 different parcels now totaling 1.89 ha that are divided between 30% terres rouges and 70% terres blanches). This is also lightly reduced and it’s enough to blur the underlying nuances of the nose save for a whiff of herbal tea. Otherwise there is excellent power and drive to the intense and even more muscular broad-shouldered flavors that culminate in an explosive, dusty and very, very tightly wound finish. Despite the excellent size and weight, this remains beautifully proportioned and should age effortlessly for several decades. In a word, terrific.

2017 Chambertin: (this consists of two well-separated parcels totaling .29 ha, mostly from Clos de Bèze with .24 ha and the remaining .05 ha in Chambertin proper; when both are blended in this fashion, the declared appellation must be Chambertin). A reticent if beautifully complex nose blends notes of various spice nuances with those of floral, red currant, plum and a hint of black cherry. The sleek, intense and wonderfully textured broad-shouldered flavors possess outstanding drive and power on the stony, austere and serious finish that possesses stunningly good depth and persistence. Like the Bonnes Mares though, this will mature very slowly.

1 case – 6/75cl Musigny Grand Cru, Domaine J-F Mugnier 2017 @ £10,295 £9,795 per 6 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £11,000++) 2-3 weeks - latest release

A superbly spicy nose combines a wide range of elements that include red and dark cherry, raspberry, lavender, violet, tea and sandalwood as well as a hint of herbal tea character. The super-sleek yet almost painfully intense and powerful big-bodied flavors are shaped by impressively fine-grained tannins on the youthfully austere finish where the power does a slow build from the mid-palate. This is very classy juice; indeed it's a Musigny of evident distinction.

2017 Musigny: (one and one-half barrels produced). A breathtakingly spicy nose is comprised by aromas of black cherry, raspberry, exotic tea and a wide array of floral elements. The super-sleek, velvety and powerful mineral-driven flavors are imposingly-scaled flavors, which despite the opulent richness retain lovely delineation on the almost painfully intense and hugely long finish. The supporting tannins are the ripest in the range though they make it indisputably clear that this is destined for a very long life, indeed 20 to 25 years would not surprise me. One of the crown jewels of the 2017 vintage.

1 case – 3/75cl Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru ‘Les Cras’, Domaine Georges Roumier 2018 @ £2,095 per 3 IB & OC now – photo attached

2018 Chambolle-Musigny “Les Cras”: (from a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 40+ years of age). Here the intensely floral-suffused nose is also quite yet fresh ripe with its aromas of poached plum, cassis and pretty spice wisps. The exceptionally rich and dense full-bodied flavors possess an opulent palate impression though the almost pungent salinity adds a sense of lift to the surprisingly powerful, mouth coating and firm finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This too possesses excellent development potential, so patience absolutely advised.

1 case – 6/75cl Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, Domaine Bart 2018 @ £945 £845 per 6 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,050-£1,195++) now – photo available

2018 Bonnes Mares: (from a 1 ha holding that is comprised of two large parcels that sit just above those of Domaine de Vogüé). A ripe yet airy nose is comprised by a well-layered mix of red and dark berry fruit that is liberally laced with spice and floral nuances. There is fine intensity to the delicious and muscular middle weight plus flavors that evidence impressive power on the palate coating and reasonably dense finale. This too needs to add depth but there underlying material appears to be up to the task.

1 case – 3/150cl Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru ‘Aux Combottes’, Domaine Dujac 2018 @ £1,995 per 3 MAGS IB & OC now – photo attached – rare magnums

2018 Gevrey-Chambertin “Aux Combottes”: (from a 1.16 ha parcel). An admirably discreet application of wood frames the very pretty and equally perfumed nose that flashes ripe notes of cassis, red currant and an impressive range of spice and floral elements. The medium weight flavors are not especially dense though the mid-palate texture is refined and lilting, all wrapped in a dusty, youthfully austere and complex finish. I like the sense of energy and while firm, this is not so structured as to be unapproachable after only 5-ish or so years. With that said, it’s built to reward 12+.

2 cases – 3/75cl Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Pierre Damoy 2018 @ £1,355 per 3 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,871++) 2-3 weeks

2018 Chapelle-Chambertin: (from vines planted in 1947 situated in Chapelle proper). A discreet top note of menthol is present on the notably spicy and ripe aromas of mostly poached plum, red currant and violet. The super-rich, thick and opulent larger-scaled flavors display evident warmth on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. This isn’t very pinot-like, and it lacks a bit of vibrancy, but it is impressive in its fashion.

2 cases – 3/75cl Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Pierre Damoy 2018 @ £1,455 per 3 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £2,640++) 2-3 weeks

2018 Chambertin: Spice, earth and mocha nuances suffuse the baked black berry fruit aromas. Once again there is exceptional richness to the big-bodied and powerful flavors that exude evident minerality on the very firm, serious and austere finish that delivers excellent length. Like the Chapelle, this lacks a bit of vibrancy at present and it isn’t classic, but the natural coolness of Chambertin helps.

2019 Chambolle-Musigny “Les Cras”: (from a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 40+ years of age). This is definitely ripe yet again quite fresh with its overtly floral combination of cassis, poached plum, anise, rose petal and discreet wood-suffused aromas. Once again there is a really lovely texture to the more obviously mineral-driven flavors that culminate in a highly refreshing, chiseled and youthfully austere finale that delivers notably better length. Impressive stuff that should age effortlessly.

1 case – 3/75cl Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, Domaine Dujac 2019 @ £3,095 per 3 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £3,500++) now – photo attached

2019 Bonnes Mares: A slightly riper nose is still quite fresh with its aromas of poached plum, violet, rose petal and gentle earth wisps. There is excellent verve to the delineated and tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that possess an intrinsic sweetness on the wonderfully complex and superbly long finish that is less austere than usual. With that said, I suspect that this may well shut down once it is in bottle. A potentially great BM.

1 case – 6/75cl Morey St Denis 1er Cru ‘La Forge de Tart’, Domaine du Clos de Tart 2020 @ £920 per 6 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,018++) 2-3 weeks

A very ripe yet elegant and complex nose features plenty of floral elements, and in particular violet and lilac, on the fresher aromas of dark berries and sandalwood. There is excellent energy and fine detail to the concentrated medium weight plus flavors that conclude in a firm, serious and robust finish, indeed this is notably powerful and impressively persistent. One to consider.

1 case – 3/75cl Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru ‘Fonteny’ Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Dugat-Py 2021 @ £790 per 3 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £939 loose+) 2-3 weeks - c.500 bottles

A whiff of herbal tea character is present on the spicy blend of both red and dark currant that enjoys an appealing variety of floral nuances. The strikingly refined and vibrant middleweight flavors possess a seductive texture that carries over to the impressively persistent finale. This could also use better depth but the potential to gradually develop it certainly appears to be present.

2021 Morey St. Denis “Clos de la Bussière”: (a 2.59 ha monopole of the domaine). Here too the expressive nose is wonderfully fresh with its blend of red and blue pinot fruit laced with evident earth and similar floral nuances. The delicious medium-bodied flavors are blessed with a beguiling sense of underlying tension that carries over to the persistent and notably more structured finale. This attractive effort is sufficiently tightly wound to require at least some patience.

2021 Chambolle-Musigny “Les Fuées”: (from 50+ year old vines). A spicier array of plum, black pinot fruit and violet serves as a fresh and elegant introduction to the gorgeously textured, sappy and denser medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent mid-palate volume, all wrapped in a clean, dry and herbal tea and mineral-inflected finale. Lovely and decidedly understated in style.

2 cases – 6/75cl Morey St Denis 1er Cru ‘La Forge de Tart’, Domaine du Clos de Tart 2021 @ £925 per 6 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,157++) 2-3 weeks

2021 Morey St. Denis – La Forge de Tart: (25% whole clusters and 50% new wood). Here there is enough reduction to push the fruit to the background. Otherwise, there is more volume and richness to the medium-bodied flavors that possess a really lovely texture on the vibrant and caressing mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the youthfully austere, balanced and impressively long finale. This is lovely and while it could use better depth, that should reasonably occur if given at least a few years of keeping.

1 case – 3/75cl Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru ‘Vieilles Vignes’, Domaine Denis Bachelet 2021 @ £1,475 per 3 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,675++) now

2021 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes: (from a .44 ha parcel of 90+ year old vines situated directly across from Chambertin; the yields are so low, and the vines so exposed that Bachelet says that he always harvests this parcel first). Generous but not invasive wood still allows the perfumed aromas of anise, violet, earth and red and dark cherry to be appreciated. The old vines are very much in evidence as there is excellent mid-palate density that coats the palate with sappy dry extract and buffers the firm core of ripe tannins shaping in the wonderfully persistent finale. The impeccably well-balanced effort should amply repay 12 to 15 years of keeping yet be approachable after only 7 to 8. Excellent.

4 cases – 6/75cl Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru ‘Le Clos des Varoilles’ MONOPOLE, Domaine Prieure Roch 2021 @ £1,525 per 6 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,550-£1,774++) 2-3 weeks

2 cases – 3/75cl Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Ponsot 2022 @ £860 per 3 IB & OWC 2-3 weeks

This is also notably ripe while managing to retain good freshness on the pretty liqueur-like aromas of essence of red currant, forest floor, crushed anise and hint of violet. There is evident minerality to the gorgeously textured and markedly finer medium weight flavors that are caressing but punchy, all wrapped in a firm, indeed almost chewy, moderately austere and balanced finale. This is a wine that's going to need at least moderate patience as it's presently compact and tightly wound.

92-94 points Allen Meadows, Burghound, Jan 2024, 2034+

2 cases – 6/75cl Mazoyeres Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Taupenot-Merme 2022 @ £1,475 per 6 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,695++) 2-3 weeks

This is aromatically ripe and more deeply pitched with its combination of wild dark currant, forest floor and game hints along with a pretty floral top note. As is usually the case, there is more size, weight and concentration to the bigger-bodied if less refined flavors that display excellent power on the more compact, more structured and impressively long finish. In contrast to the Charmes that might reasonably be approached on the younger side, such is not the case here.
