Cornas is a small appellation located south of St Joseph and on the west side of the river. The name “Cornas” comes from an old Celtic dialect meaning “burnt land” because on the steep terraces that characterise the vineyards, which are south-facing, the temperatures are significantly higher than those in nearby appellations. This cuvée, Cornas ‘Les Grandes Terrasses’ owes its name to the extremely steep terraces supported by small, dry-stone walls overlooking the Rhône Valley. The parcels are located on decomposed granite called ‘gore’ on the south-facing slopes of the hill behind the village of Cornas. The vines are aged between 20 to 60 years and yield 35 hl/ha.
