Chateau Ksara Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

  • Country Lebanon
  • Region Bekaa Valley
  • Grape Cabernet Sauvignon from a single vineyard
  • 12 months in French oak
  • Case size 6/ 75cl
  • Can be drunk young or cellared for at least 10 years. Decant at least one hour before serving.  Dense robe, deep purple-red, a spicy nose with pepper, and notes of ripe red fruits. In the mouth, it has power and length. The firm tannins confer to the wine cedar note; still young, A wonderful expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, a grape that has thrived in the Bekaa’s formidable terroir. The wine exhibits the typicity –the fruit and the spice – of this famous variety while filling with the spirit and character of an ancient land and the firm tannins conferred to the wine cedar notes.

The deep purple hue delivers aromas and flavours of raspberries, blackcurrants, and a suggestion of vanilla, spice, and leather. In the mouth, it has richness, elegance, and length with fine, balanced tannins.

Ksara's vineyards are located in the central and western Bekaa Valley at an average altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level. The Bekaa Valley enjoys dry summers and has its natural water table courtesy of the melting snow running off the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon mountain ranges. Cool nights help the vineyards withstand the summer's heat and drought. The vines are either double Guyot or cordon trained and are grown in stony soils, which are predominantly chalk. The vineyard is not irrigated, and the standard yield is between 40 and 45 hectolitres per hectare. The grapes can be considered to be grown organically because of the minimal use of sulfur-based pesticides.

Winery

Château Ksara is Lebanon’s oldest and largest winery, and its establishment laid the foundations for the country’s modern wine industry. It is in the heart of the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon’s pre-eminent wine-producing region. Winemaking began in 1857 when the estate was inherited by Jesuit monks, who began farming a 27-hectare plot of land where they produced Lebanon’s first dry red wine.  In 1973, the Vatican encouraged its missions and monasteries worldwide to divest any commercial ventures, at which point Château Ksara already had an annual production of 1.5 million bottles. Identifying Ksara’s potential, a consortium of forward-thinking local Lebanese businessmen purchased the estate and invested in the vineyards and the cellars. Ksara has a broad portfolio, including French-inspired blends from the French colonial era and more modern styles, including a white from the ancient native grape Merwah. Today, they are among the best-known and loved Lebanese producers in the UK market and are a staple of any top Lebanese restaurant list.
