A grand tour of classic Italian red wines from all regions offers fantastic diversity from all production areas, including the volcanic producers to the South. Wines are included from 18 different regions, highlighting a fantastic diversity on offer, ranging from the classic wine-producing regions of the North to the volcanic areas of the South. Castello Vicchiomaggio The historical origins of Castello Vicchiomaggio can be traced back to the 5th century. The present owners, the Matta family, acquired the property in 1964 and restored it back to its former splendour. The 150-hectare estate is one of the largest in the area; 32 hectares are dedicated to the vine. Castello Vicchiomaggio produces several styles of wine, from the traditional to the innovative. To achieve this, the estate has been carefully classified according to its soil type and exposure and is cultivated sustainably, as certified by the VIVA certification. John Matta supervises all winemaking, and his wines bear all the hallmarks of stylish elegance and are beautifully balanced. His wines truly express the Sangiovese grape at its best. Vicchiomaggio is consistently classified amongst Italy's top estates, and John Matta has been named IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year four times. Michele Chiarlo Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont's most prestigious wine producers, creating outstanding wines from some of the most exceptional sites in Piedmont, including Barolo’s world-famous Cannubi and Cerequio vineyards. Founded in 1956 by the great Michele Chiarlo and now run by his sons Alberto and Stefano, the Chiarlo philosophy “is to capture the terroir” from their sustainably cultivated vineyards, which hold the Equalitas certification. With a judicious use of oak, they handcraft a selection of wines suitable for ageing, some of which can be enjoyed earlier. Their stunning collection of Barolo and Barbera wines consistently receives 90+ points from Wine Advocate James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast. Gaja Barbaresco San Marzano In 1962, 19 vine growers from San Marzano whose families had farmed the land for generations combined their efforts to establish 'Cantine San Marzano'. Through the decades, this cooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 top-quality vine growers. They produce elegant wines that pay homage to the ancient Apulian wine traditions using modern and technologically advanced vinification techniques. The fusion of time-honoured tradition, passion and contemporary techniques enables this winery to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characteristics while reflecting the local terroir. In 2021, San Marzano was awarded the ‘Cooperative Winery of the Year Award’ by Gambero Rosso.
