- Aromas of ripe black and red berried fruits, supported by savoury and spice elements, lead to intense fruits on the palate. Exquisite acidity and a distinguished tannin profile are the 1921 Vines Shiraz hallmarks. Balanced and distinguished. The Hunter Valley experienced a mostly dry winter. Low rainfall and warm temperatures brought about early bud-burst. Lower-than-average rainfall was recorded throughout the growing season, which resulted in an early vintage. There was no disease pressure in the vineyards, so the fruit quality was high. Harvest took place around eight days earlier than usual, and although the yields were slightly lower than average, the pristine fruit showed great intensity.
The fruit was carefully selected and destemmed into small open-top fermenters. A short cold soak followed by a nine-day fermentation with selected yeasts at controlled temperatures. The wine was pressed off its skins into large format French oak barrels, of which 20% were new. The wine spent time in a tank before bottling.

Winery | This easterly-facing site was the perfect location for Maurice O'Shea's first Shiraz plantings at Mount Pleasant in 1921. Sheltered from the winds and hot afternoon sun, the fruit from this block is famed for its impeccable structure and intensity. The vineyard is cultivated using sustainable techniques, such as employing mulch to nourish the vines and growing cover crops to increase the biodiversity in the soil. This sustainable approach has resulted in some of the healthiest vines on the estate in recent years; the vines have developed plentiful canopies, which have assisted in preventing fruit sunburn. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal maturity. |
