A Refined Puligny-Montrachet with Elegance and Complexity

The Sylvain Debord Puligny-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes 2021 is a stunning expression of Burgundy's celebrated terroir, made entirely from Chardonnay. A true gem from one of the most renowned wine regions in the world, this wine offers a full-bodied, elegant profile with a distinctive balance of nutty and toasty nuances, enriched by subtle butter flavours. The wine culminates in a long and fresh finish, marked by a touch of minerality that leaves a lasting impression on the palate.

2021 Vintage: A Year of Challenges and Rewards

The 2021 growing season was a particularly challenging one for winemakers, with unpredictable weather shaping the harvest. A warm spring led to an early bud burst in late March, but devastating frosts on April 3rd, dropping temperatures to -7°C, destroyed up to 90% of the shoots. Despite these setbacks, flowering took place at the end of June, followed by a hot summer with enough rain to ensure the grapes reached optimal maturity. The harvest began on September 23rd, yielding a small yet high-quality crop—a testament to Sylvain Debord's expertise and dedication to crafting exceptional wines.

Wine Characteristics and Tasting Notes

On the nose, this Puligny-Montrachet reveals complex aromas of ripe citrus, hazelnuts, and a faint suggestion of honeyed butter, typical of the region’s Chardonnay. The palate is medium-bodied, showcasing crisp acidity balanced by a round, smooth texture. The wine's long, mineral-driven finish adds to its freshness, making it an excellent match for seafood, poultry, and dishes with rich sauces.

This Puligny-Montrachet is from a blend of two different climates within the Puligny-Montrachet appellation. The hillside slopes have a gradient of around 3% and face east, which benefit from the gentle morning sun, giving the grapes time to develop complexity. At the same time, cooler overnight influences bring balancing acidity. The old vines are gown in complex, stony, deep clay and limestone soils and are densely planted. Cultivated according to the traditional methods, they are maintained with a large and aerated canopy for sun protection in the warmer vintages of late. They are sustainably farmed with practices such as using fresh compost from local farms to nourish the vines. General treatments include copper and sulphur, and mechanical ploughing occurs to maintain the vineyard soils. Hand-harvested at optimum maturity.
