Tyrrells Library Release VAT 1 Semillon 2009

  • Country Australia
  • Region Hunter Valley
  • Grape Semillon
  • Case 6/75
  • Abv 11.5 %
  • Semillon was the most awarded and recognised person in the Hunter Valley. Tyrrell’s Winemakers Selection Vat 1 Hunter Valley Semillon is sourced from two of the best blocks of Semillon, which have light, sandy, well-drained soils. Vines are planted on their roots and dry-grown. The oldest material was planted in 1923. An inviting nose of citrus and a palate that is the perfect mid-point between power and elegance. Its delicate yet crisp acid profile balances the signature Vat 1 fruit power, resulting in a seamless wine with a clean finish. Poised to enjoy a long life in the cellar.

Handpicked in the early morning hours, the fruit is lightly crushed and pressed before a relatively cool fermentation. The wine then spends minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. There is no oak fermentation or maturation.

Vat 1 Semillon only comes from our best old vine, dry-grown vineyards. These blocks feature ideal sandy, free-draining soils that give these wines unique characteristics. The oldest of these blocks was planted in 1923.

“I tasted all the white Private Bin member releases last week for over a few days, and I’ll write them up over a few days. The fruit
source for this Vat 1 is largely from the Short  Flat vineyard. Lemon powder and subtle tropical notes, but largely drenched in freshly squeezed
lime. It has richness and intensity of flavour but remains tangy – the acid line feels tight and secure – enough to anchor it safely for many years. Sails through the mouth and coasts effortlessly long through the finish. In short, a  richer style, but a beautiful Vat 1.”
GARY WALSH – THE WINE FRONT 95 POINTS
“Vat 1 Semillon is fermented in stainless steel, spending a short time on lees in the tank before bottling. It sees no oak. The 2010 Winemaker’s
Selection Vat 1 Semillon has youthfully mute aromas of lemon peel, fresh grass, chalkboards, lime juice and grapefruit. Very crisp, dry
and light-bodied, it possesses an excellent concentration of citrus and mineral flavors, finishing long. Don’t even think about drinking this now – try it in about 5-6 years, when it will start to enter its drinking window. It should cellar to 2022+.”
