- This is a great medium-bodied red wine: fresh acidity, plush red fruits, a whisper of spice, and the kind of structure ready for the esky. Sweet nutmeg and baking spice aromatics, with a woody, cedary undercurrent, are backed up by these bright, punchy blue and brambly black fruits. This year, there is a great mineral drive, and crispy tannins frame the salty acid line. This Nero d'Avola pops with juicy fruit and spice. Perfect with charcuterie or pizza—pop a chill on it!
Viticulturally, Nero looks absolutely at home year after year in Riverland, as it achieves a balanced level of ripeness that we don’t see year on year with the other regions - it’s probably the easiest of the three to decide when to pick. It’s bang-on this year, and as always, it looks just that little bit Gamay-esque, almost like Cru Beaujolais. Lovely sweet nutmeg and baking spice aromatics, with a woody, cedary undercurrent, backed up by these bright punchy blue and brambly black fruits. Incredible mineral drive this year, salty acid line framed by crispy tannins. A bit of meaty chew to it - how lovely! As always, chill it down - it’ll be great with charcuterie this year or even pepperoni pizza! It has always been a party wine, and it continues to be.

Winery | Unico Zelo is a small winery, run by the youthful Brendan and Laura Carter. Still only in their mid-twenties, this dynamic couple has been making wine under the Unico Zelo label for the last seven years, taking their inspiration from their intense passion for their native land. The wines are crafted from varieties requiring minimal intervention in the vineyard and the winery. The in-depth study of vineyard sites in South Australia has led them to focus on Italian varieties, such as Fiano and Nero d’Avola, which are perfectly suited to be dry-farmed in the arid Riverland as well as Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, and Barbera which flourish in the inland, continental climate of the Clare Valley. These delicious and unique wines combine sustainability and drinkability to great effect. |
