- A smooth, creamy, and beautifully balanced Timorasso, delivering notes of pear and peach layered with mineral and floral nuances and delicious honey tones. 2021 was a warm year. A rainy winter with plenty of snow followed a drier spring weather with little rain. The summer was medium-hot, with a rather wet July and an almost summer-like month of September. The wines show great structure and intensity. Potentially an outstanding vintage for ageing, 2021 was rated excellent.

The grapes were destemmed and then gently pressed. Fermentation occurred with selected yeasts, mostly in ceramic vessels and a smaller portion in stainless steel tanks and large oak casks. The wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation, retaining a crisp style. The wine was matured for 10 months in ceramic vessels, steel vats and large oak casks with frequent bâtonnage imparting balancing texture.

Winery | Timorasso is an ancient Piedmontese grape variety on the verge of extinction in the 1980s. Pre-phylloxera used to be an important variety, but it fell out of favour as a delicate, low-yielding variety to cultivate. However, it is now enjoying a resurgence in popularity. The vines are grown in the Colli Tortonesi DOC, where the climate is warm and has a Mediterranean feel. The wine takes its name ‘Derthona’ from the traditional name in the local dialect for the town of Tortona. The grapes for this wine are grown in various vineyard sites in and around Monleale. They are from southeastern to southwestern, facing vineyards, maximising the vine’s exposure to the afternoon sun and encouraging the grapes to reach full maturity. The soil comprises calcareous marl, in which the Timorasso vines thrive. The vines are hand-harvested. |
