Producing world-class dry Austrian White Wines favoured by many worldwide. As in Germany, Riesling is important, although Austrian examples tend to be drier and fuller than those grown on the banks of the Mosel or Rhine. In Gruner Veltliner, Austria has a native grape variety capable of producing world-class wines. Grown along the Danube, it can yield a variety of styles, ranging from crisp, light and peppery to rich, concentrated and long-lived, depending greatly upon where it is planted. Weingut Johann Donabaum The young, dynamic and modest Johann has been making elegant, defined and terroir-driven wines for 25 years and has carved out a formidable reputation - his wines are always in high demand. His two hectares of family-owned vineyards cling to the precipitous, schistous slopes of the Spitzer Valley. Johann cultivates sustainably and holds the Vinea Wachau sustainable certification. He manages the vineyards to give incredibly low yields, and his production is minuscule, but his prices remain competitive despite this. Many wineries in Austria pick with a proportion of Botrytis-affected grapes to add sweetness, but Johann believes this distracts from his exceptional terroir. His wines age incredibly well, and his multi-award-winning wines and rave reviews attest to his methods and approach. Weingut Rabl Located in Austria's prestigious Kamptal-Donau wine region, Weingut Rabl is a byword for wines of the highest quality. The winery enjoys a vine-growing tradition dating back to 1750. Now, under the watchful eye of Rudolf Rabl Jr., the estate comprises 100 hectares of the best hillside vineyards in and around Langenlois. The Kamp Valley has a unique microclimate and rich soils with abundant minerals. Rudolf Rabl combines these natural resources with sustainable practices in the vineyard -certified by Sustainable Austria - and uses modern winemaking techniques to produce a multi-award-winning range of complex wines. Weingut Rabl was awarded the IWSC Trophy for White Wine Maker of the Year in 2019 and 2021.
