- Complex notes of blackcurrant leaf, citrus, and white flowers give way to minty, herbal notes on the nose. The medium-weight palate has a fruity attack, with red apples, mandarins, and passion fruit flavours. Crafted with food in mind, the Black Label wines have been grown on estate-owned vineyards and made in a slightly richer and more textural style. Inviting and musky. Gooseberry, mandarin, and a hint of fennel. Fresh and lively on entry with lemon, lime, gooseberry, and blackcurrant. Mid-palate builds in weight, and flavors of grapefruit and honeydew melon join. Pineapple is evident on the finish. Soft and layered with a lingering spicy finish.
Analytical data
dry
Crafted with food in mind, the Black Label wines have been grown on estate owned vineyards and made in a style that is slightly richer and more textural. Pungent with black currant and boxwood. Lime, gooseberry, and smoky herbals are also apparent.
Fleshy and fruit-sweet entry heavy with passionfruit and a little blackcurrant. Underling this, we have complex herbal and citrus notes. Mineral and spice on the finish. Nice breadth and length.

Winery | Babich has a rare heritage in New Zealand, with its history long predating the viticultural boom of the last thirty years. Croatian immigrant Josip Babich made his first wine in Auckland in 1916, and one hundred years later, his descendants are still going strong – the third generation of the family, David Babich, now holds the reins. They boast an impressive 449 hectares under vine, spread across thirteen vineyards in Auckland, Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough, supplying the vast majority of the grapes that go into their wines. This long history does not prevent them from thinking of the future. In 1987, their Fernhill Vineyard in Hawke’s Bay was the first to be sustainably registered in New Zealand, whilst the 57-hectare Headwaters Vineyard (the source of Mara Sauvignon Blanc) has been certified organic since 2013. This commitment to the environment continues today, enacted through their vineyard and winery practices. |
